Cats are superbly superior in physical power, agility and alertness to most domesticated animals. Cats are very common house pets and there are many in the streets when active. Sharing your home with a cat can be quite the challenge. Such intelligent, quick animals can be stubborn and need special techniques.
Make sure to keep your cat’s litter box clean at all times. Most cats do not like to use a dirty litter box, much like you would not want to use a dirty toilet. Scoop it at least once a day. Empty and give it a good cleaning once a week or more if needed.
Cats are constantly grooming themselves, and this is why they rarely need a bath. If your cat gets into something particularly stinky, a bath will not hurt them. If your cat does not like water you might want to wear gloves so that you do not get scratched. You might also want to enlist the help of a friend or family member.
If your dog and cat are best friends, be sure to keep them separate after flea treatment. Your dog’s flea products are very hazardous for cats. Cats that come in contact with dog flea products often die. Be sure to use only cat products on your cat and only dog products on your dog.

Handle your kitten often. The longer your cat is handled as a kitten, the more readily they will accept being handled when they are grown, especially around their paws. This is important as all cats will have to visit the vet occasionally, and this process is much easier and less stressful if the cat is accustomed to being handled. It will also make grooming and nail trimming much easier.
Cover the area around your cat’s bowl with a cloth. Cats like to make a mess when they eat. This may make a big mess that you need to clean up. An easy solution to this problem is a placemat underneath the food dish, or a piece of fabric you can easily wash.
If you want a cat that is well-behaved and not prone to biting and scratching, make sure that you do not try to adopt one when it is too young. It takes 12-16 weeks for a kitten to learn proper cat behavior from their mom and all of their siblings.
Do not wait too long to scoop any waste that has accumulated in a cat litter box. When left dirty for too long, bacteria can grow and it can cause health issues for you and your kitten. It is best to do this every single day so you avoid any issues.
When the cat’s litter box starts to become rough and worn at the bottom, it is time to replace it. If you leave it this way, it will cause waste to accumulate in damaged areas. Your cat may be very offended by the odor and decide to use the bathroom somewhere else in the house.
Consider buying your cat a special drinking fountain. Cats like running water in the wild, as well as in the home. A constant stream of water will entice them to stay hydrated. In fact, many cats like drinking from faucets more than from their water bowls. A fountain will allow a cat to drink naturally and is better for the environment.
